Every generation asks the same question:
Can God’s Word really be trusted?
We live in a world overflowing with voices claiming to have the answers. Experts, influencers, academics, politicians, psychologists, social media personalities, and self-help gurus all promise wisdom. Every day we are told where to find happiness, purpose, peace, and fulfillment.
As a result, many people spend their lives searching for answers everywhere except the Bible.
But before we ask whether Scripture is trustworthy, we should ask a more fundamental question:
What source of wisdom should we trust?
The First Attack on Truth
This question did not begin in modern times. It began in the Garden of Eden.
When Satan approached Eve, his first attack was not against God Himself but against God’s Word.
“Did God actually say…?” (Genesis 3:1)
The serpent planted doubt about what God had spoken. He suggested that God’s Word could not be trusted and that another source of wisdom existed.
Eve was offered an alternative path to knowledge. Adam and Eve were tempted to seek wisdom apart from God. They were promised that they could become “like God,” determining for themselves what was right and wrong.
At its heart, the fall was a rejection of God’s authority and a pursuit of self-sufficiency.
Adam and Eve chose to trust their own judgment over God’s revelation.
The same temptation confronts us today.
The Modern Search for Wisdom
The world has not changed much since Eden.
Humanity is still searching for wisdom apart from God.
We trust our feelings.
We trust popular opinion.
We trust experts.
We trust our own understanding.
We trust whatever seems right in the moment.
The problem is not that human wisdom has no value. God’s common grace allows people to discover many useful things about His creation. Medical advances, scientific discoveries, and practical knowledge can all be blessings from God.
The problem comes when human wisdom is elevated above God’s Word.
Scripture repeatedly warns us about the limitations of human understanding.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5)
Human knowledge is always incomplete. Human opinions change. Cultural values shift. What one generation celebrates, the next generation often rejects.
God’s truth does not change.
What About Science?
Some people assume that science and Scripture are enemies.
They are not.
Science is the study of God’s creation. Scripture is God’s revelation of Himself, His purposes, and His truth.
Throughout history, many pioneers of modern science believed they were studying a universe created by an orderly and rational God. Their confidence that the world could be understood flowed from their belief that God had created it with order and purpose.
Science is a valuable tool, but it has limitations.
Science can tell us how the heart pumps blood.
It cannot tell us why we were created.
Science can analyze the human brain.
It cannot explain how sinners are reconciled to a holy God.
Science can describe physical realities.
It cannot determine moral truth.
The scientific process itself is constantly refining and correcting previous conclusions as new evidence emerges. That is one of its strengths.
God’s Word, however, does not change because God does not change.
While human knowledge continues to grow, God’s truth remains fixed.
Why Christians Trust Scripture
Christians do not ultimately trust Scripture because archaeology supports it.
Christians do not ultimately trust Scripture because science occasionally confirms details found within it.
Those things can strengthen confidence in the Bible, and many discoveries have done exactly that.
But the deepest reason Christians trust Scripture is because Jesus trusted Scripture.
Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus treated the Old Testament as the very Word of God. He quoted it as authoritative. He appealed to it as truth. He built His teaching upon it.
Jesus declared:
“Scripture cannot be broken.” (John 10:35)
If Christ is who He claimed to be—the Son of God, crucified and risen from the dead—then His view of Scripture matters more than the opinions of scholars, critics, or cultural trends.
For the Christian, confidence in Scripture ultimately rests upon confidence in Christ.
The Real Question
The greatest challenge facing humanity is not a lack of information.
We have more information today than any generation in history.
The real issue is whom we will trust.
Will we trust ourselves?
Will we trust the changing wisdom of the world?
Will we trust our feelings?
Or will we trust the God who created us and has spoken to us?
Every day we face the same choice Adam and Eve faced in the garden.
Will we seek wisdom apart from God, or will we submit ourselves to the wisdom He has already revealed?
The Bible teaches that true wisdom begins with humility—recognizing that we are not God and never will be.
Scripture is trustworthy because its Author is trustworthy.
And when God speaks, the wisest thing we can do is listen.
